Black Belt Martial Arts Students Learn Capoeira, Brazilian Dance Fighting, from Visiting Instructor

Black Belt students at Personal Mastery Martial Arts in Sandy, Utah had a very unique experience this weekend when Master Will Mallmann visited their martial arts school and introduced them to Capoeira, a martial art that is often referred to as -Brazilian Dance Fighting.- Although students at Personal Mastery Martial Arts have a lot of experience in Taekwondo, Hapkido, and other martial arts forms, for most of the students this was their first time learning about or seeing Capoeira demonstrated.

Master Will Mallmann taught a seminar for the black belt students where he not only demonstrated Capoeira, but also taught some of the basic movements and tricks. Participants in the seminar learned many things from the basic movement of the ginga, one of the most fundamental movements of Capoeira, to handstands and headstand cartwheels.

Capoeira is a martial arts form that combines dancing, acrobatics, and martial arts techniques. Unlike many other martial arts, in Capoeira music is an essential element. When Capoeira is performed it is always performed to music and those watching help to keep the tempo by clapping in time with the music. The Capoeira performer matches their performance to the tempo of the music.

For many of the participants at the Capoeira seminar, the performance at the end was their favorite part. All of the students stood in a circle and took turns going in and demonstrating their new-found Capoeira skills in time with the music. Everyone clapped and helped the performer stay with the tempo of the music, often calling out encouragement. The game quickly turned competitive.

One participant, Kim McGowan-Jackson said, -The Capoeira seminar was so fun tonight! Thank you to Master Will Mallmann who has beyond awesome skills. Everyone did such a fantastic job. I think this is the beginning of a super fun Martial Arts weekend. I got to be a Brazilian fighter tonight!-

Personal Mastery Martial Arts often invites visiting instructors to the school to teach their students about different kinds of martial arts and self defense systems. So while Master Will Mallmann was the not the first visiting instructor to visit the school, the students loved having him visit and teach them new things, and they look forward to his next visit.
